Antimicrobial susceptibility pattern of Escherichia coli at University of Abuja Teaching Hospital: A Retrospective Study

Escherichia coli (E. coli), a normal gastro-intestinal microflora of humans and animals can be pathogenic causing wide range diseases. Rational use antibiotics is one way reducing antimicrobial resistance. This study retrospectively assessed the resistance patterns E. from clinical samples at University Abuja Teaching Hospital. Records test results microbial, culture sensitivity January 2016 to December 2019 were studied. A proforma was used collect data record on pattern coli. Discrete categorical variables reported as frequencies percentages. Requirements for met in 91.7% collected. Female clients 81.8% more than their male counterparts. Urine have highest number 62%. followed by palate swab 14%. Eye swab, vaginal ascitic fluid pleural had each (0.03%). The penicillin mostly resisted isolates, while most sensitive fluoroquinolones cephalosporins. Summary showed isolates effect antimicrobials 2018, resistant 2017 2019. urinary tract common site infection. inconsistent across all antibiotic classes studied
